The Athens County Sheriff’s Office says it is still trying to figure out why an area fire chief allegedly committed suicide last Friday.
Lieutenant Aaron Maynard says one of the on-duty firefighters at the Nelsonville Fire Department found 53-year-old Timothy Carr with a gun shot wound to the head and notified authorities.
When officers arrived at the scene, Maynard says they found Carr was still breathing and also recovered a .380 caliber handgun.
Carr was taken to a local hospital and later taken by medical helicopter to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident is still under investigation.
Maynard says the Nelsonville Fire Department is shocked and hurt in the light of carr’s death, and counseling has been made available to firefighters.
