Area Children Shop With a Cop

Some lucky Muskingum County children got to go shopping tonight with a special partner.

About 50 children shopped with officers from the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Department and Zanesville Police Department.

The program Shop With a Cop pairs children with officers to buy items such as clothes and toys for Christmas.

"The officers love doing it," said President of the Associates Lodge FOP Jim Hicks. "They’ve been talking about it for several
Weeks. The children, when we talk to them, they get excited about it."

But, because of the economy, Shop With a Cop hasn’t been able to serve as many children this year as in years past.

"It’s down a little from last year. We’ve been doing 75 to 80. Fund raising was down a little this year because of fund raising. We were going to do 40, but things picked up in the last few weeks and added another 10 children. We’re happy with the turnout."

Shop With a Cop is a national program, serving most states.

This year, each child was able to receive up to $100 worth of goodies from the program.
