Area hometown heroes are honored in a ceremony this morning at the air national guard base.

Awards were given to the men and women who bravely fought in the war against terror overseas.

"We had over 80 individuals that were recognized today for being deployed from 9/11 all the way up until 2009," says Major Bonnie Gamary with the Air National Guard.

Major Gamary was one of the soldiers honored this morning. She was deployed in October of 2001 in response to the 9/11 terror attacks.

"Being deployed you feel like you get to do something, it is quite rewarding, especially after 9/11 we all felt like our hands were tied just cause we wanted to do something and I felt very fortunate that I was one of the first people that got to do something," says Major Gamary.

Air National Guard members like, Staff Sergeant Cory Chapman say it was a great celebration.

"It felt amazing, it was quite an honor to be recognized by the state for what we have done," says Staff Sgt. Cory Chapman.

The ceremony also recognized the families and employers that support the Air National Guard members. After the ceremony, more than 300 people were treated to lunch and families enjoyed some quality time together.
