If you’re looking to get into shape next year or lose some weight, exercise alone won’t cut it.
Nutritionist Sarah Brauning says you need to count those calories too. A woman is recommended to consume no more than 1,500 calories a day and a man, no more than two thousand.
The biggest culprit for going over that number is drinking pop.
"If someone is a pop drinker, I always start by eliminating that if I can, or at least cutting back. I think it’s easier to eliminate than cut back. Cutting back usually just leads back to drinking what they were before, " says Brauning.
Snacking is a problem as well. Brauning says you need to have fruits and vegetables for snacks, and she says if that doesn’t sound good, then you weren’t really hungry in the first place.
She also recommends keeping a food diary.
"It makes you terribly aware of what you’re doing, when you’re eating, where you’re eating, and what triggers overeating, " says Brauning.
If you find yourself hungry multiple times throughout the day, Brauning also suggests eating more meals but make them smaller in portion size.
