The Muskingum Valley Red Cross’ Relief Fund is still down by about 30 percent, but Executive Director, Dan Hartman, says it’s not affecting the way his staff helps families.
"In the last few weeks, we’ve had seven fires, seven families we’ve helped with a total of 30 family members. Is that up a little bit, yeah, " says Hartman.
Hartman says the worst of the fire season is still to come, which lasts through March. He says these losses though have been more difficult on families.
"The economic situations have made people’s plights a little bit worse. Although folks are opening doors and family members. It’s that time of year where no body should be without, " says Hartman.
The causes of most of the fires within the past week have been electrical, so Hartman offers some tips, including not plugging too many items into a single electrical outlet, keep an eye on space heaters or other heating sources, and have an evacuation plan in place so family members aren’t injured.
