The Salvation Army in Zanesville is packing boxes and organizing toys to get ready to give more than a thousand toys to families in tomorrow’s Angel Tree toy giveaway.
Captain Ralph Cambpell with the Salvation Army says he expects around 1,400 families, possibly more, to attend. Each family will receive a box of food and a choice of three toys per child. Families signed up for the Angel Tree back in October and were assigned a time to come in Friday to pick up their toys and food.
"Someone will bring them through and take them to the toys and they will get their toys and take them to our clothing area and they will get their food box and they will be taken out the back door where they can put it in their car," says Capt. Campbell.
The Salvation Army also received a record breaking 150 bikes this year and 94 bikes were donated by a local business that wants to remain anonymous. Captain Campbell says even in these tough times, people in Zanesville have come forward to donate toys and make the Angel Tree toy giveaway a successful event. For many families, these are the only gifts that will be under their Christmas trees and Captain Campbell says those families are very thankful.
"When you see people come in that are thankful and they see the gifts and you see the smile and ‘oh wow’ it is fantastic, sometimes you just can’t find the words to describe it, but it is an awesome feeling," says Capt. Campbell.
The Angel Tree giveaway begins Friday at 9 AM and is only open to families that filled out an application in October. Last year Captain Campbell says the Salvation Army helped more than 2,800 families with toys and packed 3,700 boxes of food.
