Taking Home Inventory This Holiday Season

This is the season of giving, and many of us will be receiving an array of gifts as well.

So, Muskingum County Sheriff, Matt Lutz, says once the holidays are over, it’s a great time to take a home inventory.

Writing down serial and ven numbers found on products and then storing then in a safe place will save you heartache in the long-run if someone were to steal items from your home.

"That way, if we come to the scene, you can give that information to us. We have a leads computer that searches nationally for stolen merchandise. So, if somebody does come across the piece of equipment and an officer would check those numbers, it would come up stolen, " says Lutz.

If making a list of your home inventory is too much work, Lutz offers another idea.

"A lot of people these days will go through at videotape their residence. So, if they do have a fire for insurance purposes or whatever-or something does happen as far as breaking in, they can record what they have in their house, " says Lutz.

Lutz says it’s important to take a home inventory at least once a year.
