Local kids hit the hardwood Sunday afternoon at Tri-Valley High School for the annual Knights of Columbus free throw championship.

Close to 20 children, ages 10-14, competed at the local level to gain a spot at the district championship in Granville.

"We had eight winners that are going to the district in Granville and we hope to have some people even go to regional and even state, we have a very good following from this council that goes all the way," says Roy McCarty with Knights of Columbus.

This is the 18th year the Knights of Columbus have held the free throw championship. While it is a competition, McCarty says it is a family event and gives kids an outlet to have fun.

"On a cold day like this it gives them a chance to come to the gym and shoot free throws and it doesn’t cost them anything just get here and shoot," says McCarty.

Each child received a participation certificate and winners received a trophy. The eight winners  will compete in the district competition the first weekend in Feburary against children from Granville, Newark, Buckeye Lake and Hebron.
