Bed Bugs Emerging Problem

They’re small but are still visible to the eye. They can leave you with an itchy red bump that almost looks like a mosquito bite, and they could be crawling around your mattress.

They’re bed bugs that are growing in numbers and showing up in all 50 states.

"I work for the Ohio Department of Health, and we get about a call a week. That’s what we got in 2009. Now, I’m getting about a call a day, " says Public Health Entomologist, Mary Daniels.

That’s not including the number of calls that local health departments are receiving, including right here in Muskingum County.

Daniels says one of the reasons bed bugs are re-emerging is because the chemicals used to kill the bugs are not as effective.

"They are easily transported. When people travel, they can hitch-hike on suitcases. They’re good hitch-hikers on backpacks, shoes, and clothes, " says Daniels.

Then they find their way to your mattress. The best place to find bed bugs is near the seem of the mattress. Daniels says they are great at hiding, but you can see the residue of blood spots that they leave behind.

If you think you have bed bugs in your home, contact the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department at 740-454-9741 or the Ohio Health Department at 614-752-1029.
