Muskingum County may soon have a Foreign Trade Zone that will save local businesses money.

Commissioner Brian Hill says this will really be an advantage and benefit companies in Muskingum County.

"Where people are looking to locate to Muskingum County an opportunity to be part of a Foreign Trade Zone which give them advantages when you are importing and exporting products," Hill said.

Foreign Trade Zone official Kathy Mills says it’s really a customs duty program. This new program saves money and time. Before foreign trade could take anywhere from 6 to 12 months. With this program it will only take 30 to 45 days. And companies can import  and not have to pay the U-S custom duties.

"This allows for those parts to come in here but hopefully be made into something manufactured into a greater product that then the company could save money but also keep the jobs in Ohio rather than moving all the job over seas," Mills said.

It does not cost the county any money but there is a fee for the business using the service. The Muskingum County Commissioners submitted a letter to support for the program.  It wiill take six months to get approval for the program.
