ODOT Monitoring Potential Winter Storm

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for our area that will go into effect Friday afternoon and last through Saturday.

There’s the potential for a moderate snowfall, and ODOT is already ahead of the game, tracking the storm. It has a team of forecasters located at its central office.

"They will explain that there is a weather system heading our way and tell them what kind of system it is, " says Public Information Officer Kate Stickle.

Another valuable tool ODOT utilizes is its Road Weather Information Systems. There are more than 170 scattered throughout the state of Ohio.

"It’s real time information. It’s updated every five minutes for county managers and every hour for the public on buckeyetraffic.org. Then we can go there and see what the pavement conditions are in certain areas, " says Stickle.

The systems also are able to indicate wind speed, wind direction, and the type of precipitation that is falling.
