Is it possible that Zanesville may see plans underway to build a recreation center in the near future?
That’s a question that has been on the minds of four local partners. Ohio University-Zanesville, Genesis Healthcare System, the Muskingum County Community Foundation, and the YMCA have been exploring this idea, and should have a definite decision in about six months.
"We’re probably, if you look around the state, we may be one of the largest towns that doesn’t have a public facility like this, and it’s time after 30 years that Zanesville have one too, " says Ohio University-Zanesville Dean, James Fonseca.
The four partners are still estimating a total cost of the facility and finding payment methods.
"We’re looking at all avenues. I think all of the partners would make a contribution. We’re also exploring state and federal money, but a lot of it would have to be raised from our local community, " says Fonseca.
The recreation center would be added as an extension to Littick Hall on the campus of Ohio University-Zanesville. It would include fitness equipment, sports courts, and a pool among other features.
Fonseca says the project would take about a year to complete.
