Some area students are being recognized for their academic efforts and receiving help for college.

Tonight at the 21st Annual Student Leadership Recognition Ceremony, students from Morgan, Muskingum and Coshocton counties received $500 or $1,000 awards thanks to assorted scholarships.

"These are just kids who are doing great work," said Superintendent of the MVESC Dr. Richard Murray. "We just want to recognize the work and the effort."

"It feels great," said Rachel Beam, a recipient of the Franklin B. Walter Scholarship. "Right now I’m worrying about how to pay for college and it’s nice to have some help paying for that huge expensive college."

Beam plans to use the scholarship toward tuition at Ohio State University or Malone University.

Another winner, Rachel Lowe had a special connection to the Susan Mahoney Writing Award.

"When I found out that this scholarship was up for grabs, I really wanted to jump on it," said Lowe. "She was one of my favorite teachers. Being that I’m a successful writer and it’s something I enjoy doing, I really felt like I had a great chance and I wanted to make sure I tried my best for it."

Students weren’t the only ones honored at tonight’s ceremony. Outstanding teachers were also honored for their work motivating students to be successful.
