More than 300 meals are made every weekday for local senior citizens and delivered to their homes.
The Muskingum County Center For Seniors prepares those meals as part of its Meals on Wheels program.
In the month of March the national program wants to raise awareness of senior hunger.
And Muskingum County Commissioner Jerry Lavy is supporting the senior program by volunteering today.
It’s very important to the community because this is the only opportunity some of these people may get for a good hot and nutritious meal. It’s very vital to them and I think it’s something that can help these individuals." Lavy said.
Lavy said it’s also great because the seniors are so happy to get visitors. Muskngum County Commissioner John Bates also volunteered and said his heart goes out to the seniors. And since the meals are paid for by donations only, he said the County could help.
"In case of they get a little tight on their budget this year we informed Terry that the County would be willing to help out on Meals on Wheels to make sure that program wasn’t cut," Bates said.
Last year the Muskingum County Center for Seniors served a total of 116,000 meals.
