The Crooksville Fire Department is investigating the cause of an overnight fire.

It happened around 1:45 a.m. at 572 Washington Street.

Fire Chief Fred Redford says when crews arrived, flames were visible on two sides of the structure.

New Lexington and Roseville Fire Departments were called in to assist.

Redford says while battling the flames, there was an explosion that occurred, but he says it did not injure any of the firefighters. That explosion did cause crews to evacuate the family that lived next door. Redford says they were taken to a neighbor’s house for a few hours.

Redford says the explosion forced firefighters to battle the flames with a defensive attack method. They were on scene until about 5 a.m.

He says the explosion was brought on by an oxygen tank that was left in the home.

The structure is considered a total loss. It was unoccupied, and Redford says there was no power connected to the home.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation. Redford says he did contact the State Fire Marshall’s Office to look into the matter.
