There aren’t as many H1N1 cases surfacing in the US, but health organizations say there’s still the chance that a third wave of the virus could develop this spring.

"The World Health Organization is declining to reduce the pandemic level because it’s not winter yet in the southern hemisphere. So, I think they’re waiting to see what will happen when winter strikes in the south, " says Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department Health Commissioner, Corey Hamilton.

Hamilton says the seriousness of the disease hasn’t lessened either.

"It’s quite a hearty bug. It has caused quite a bit of death compared to normal seasonal flu. It’s a much higher rate, " says Hamilton.

The health department has already administered about 21 thousand H1N1 vaccinations, which equates to 25 percent of the population in Muskingum County. It’s still offering H1N1 clinics. To find the locations of these clinics, call 740-454-9741.
