In the first few months of 2010, both the Zanesville Fire and Police departments are on target.
At today’s Public Safety Meeting, council members met with the fire and police chiefs as well as the public safety director to discuss where the departments stand on their budgets.
"The fire and police departments are fairly on budget," said Public Safety Chairman Andrew Roberts. "Recently a communications person has left in the police department, causing some overtime. We’ll have to wait and see through vacation season how things go."
Roberts said the departments had to work from the temporary budget passed by city council.
He said hopefully in the next few weeks, after the final budget passes, the departments will then be able to spend out of the finalized budget.
There was also discussion about adding an EMS service to the fire department.
"We currently have EMS service through community ambulance," he said. "However it is being discussed that the fire department could provide the same service or a better service. At little or no cost to the tax payer."
Roberts said, if the fire department were to add an EMS service, it could bring in more revenue to the department. The public safety director and fire chief plan to look into the possibility and will present their information in six months.
