The Newark Police Department is investigating a dead body that was found at the scene of an early morning fire.

It happened at an apartment complex in the 400 block of Mount Vernon Road.

"Right now, it’s not looking as though the death had any kind of criminal element. It also appears as though the fire was accidental, " says Sergeant Scott Snow.

Snow says firefighters extinguished the blaze and then went to investigate the scene where they happened to come across the dead body of a male.

"The body was found in an apartment where it appears a fire was started. Now, whether the death was a result of the fire or may have been one of the contributing elements to the fire, we’re just going to have to wait and see, " says Snow.

State Fire Marshal’s Office spokesman, Shane Cartmill, says the fire appears to have started near a futon or sofa bed in the apartment. The cause remains under investigation.

The man’s body was sent to the coroner’s office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Snow says his department has an idea of who the individual is but haven’t made a positive identification yet.
