Fools on the Roof

There wasn’t much fooling around on the roof of the Genesis Healthplex Thursday.

Thanks to a ladder truck from the Zanesville Fire Department, some well known community figures spent time on the rooftop as part of the 9th Annual Fool’s on the Roof event, which raises money for the American Cancer Society and helps fund local programs for cancer patients.

"We want to keep winning the battle and hope that one day we can find a cure for this devastating disease," said Michele Hankinson from the American Cancer Society. "We’re not going to let cancer get us down. We’re going to fight."

Some fools took different approaches to raising the $500 needed to get down. Some begged and even used two phones to raise their funds.

"I went through all my contacts, calling all my friends and family, people from church, now moved on to some business contacts," said Aaron Wahl from Summerville at North Hills. "I’m just playing the whole joke that it’s April Fools and that I need money, then actually asking them for money."

And at the end of the day it all came down to raising funds to fight a battle that’s touched a lot of people’s lives.

"Cancer has had a huge impact on my family," said Wahl. "I lost my grandparents to a battle with cancer and a year ago I lost my uncle. It pulls at my heart strings and touches close to home."

Even our very own Andy Sheperd was rooftop for a time. And Zanesville’s Fool’s on the roof event is catching on taking place Thursday in Coshocton and in Cambridge Friday.
