An annual block party, known as High Fest, just off Ohio University’s campus gets out of hand Saturday night.
The Athens Police Department says the event was under control for a majority of the day, until a large amount of bottles were thrown in the street between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Lieutenant Dave Williams says a fire was started around this time as well, using chairs and trash cans. The Ohio University Police Department assisted officers in clearing the area and telling individuals to go home. The Athens Fire Department was able to put the fire out and the city street department cleared most of the debris. An OU police cruiser did obtain a flat tire as a result of the incident by running over glass in the street. Lieutenant Ralph Harvey says officers responded to 27 calls that night and arrested 3 people.
It isn’t the first time local law enforcement agencies have had problems with these spring block parties. Palmer Fest, last May, almost escalated into a riot where a fire was set in the middle of the street and some police horses were injured after individuals threw beer can and bottles at the animals.
