One local enitity is working to protect and promote health within the community.

The Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department says there’s two big issues locals are facing: obesity and smoking.

So, it has been asking people, including its employees, to make one positive health change this week.

"Whether it’s eat an extra fruit or vegetable a day, take the stairs, or go to your doctor for a check-up, " says Public Information Officer, Jennifer Heistand.

Health department employees have been keeping track of these health choices all week, which Heistand says will add up in the long-run. She says it takes about 21 days to make something a habit.

"Just keep at it. You’ll have your bad days. So much happens in a day, and it’s just easy for something to throw your day off, but just keep at it. If you keep thinking small steps, you can end up making big changes, " says Heistand.

The health department’s efforts are part of National Public Health Week, which wraps up tomorrow.
