Starting in the fall, students at the Newark Middle and High Schools will have to follow a dress code.
Monday night, the Board of Education unanimously approved a new dress code for the 2010/2011 school year.
Newark City Schools Director of Communications Fran Russ says the students will have the choice of wearing khaki or black pants and must wear a polo or oxford shirt that is either white, black, crimson or grey.
Russ says the Board began discussing the possiblity of a dress code back in January. She says they also held two community meetings.
Russ says there are three reasons the district decided to institute a dress code.
The first being to put learning as the focus and not fashion, secondly ,to reduce the number of dress code violations and lastly, it will allow school officials to easily identify the students on campus.
