Hunters grabbed 16 percent more turkeys during the spring hunting season.

Almost 22 thousand turkeys were checked in the four-week period before the season ended this past Sunday.

Ashtabula County came in top on the leader board with more than 900 turkeys. Tuscarawas County tied in third with Harrison County, reporting around 625 turkeys, Guernsey County in fourth with about 620 turkeys, and Coshocton County came in tenth with more than 550 turkeys.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife estimated that about 70 thousand people would take part in the spring hunting season and be after the 200 thousand birds that populate the state.
