Muskingum County Fraud & Prank Calls

The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office wants the public to know about a new style of fraud that’s being used.

Sheriff Matt Lutz says there’s been a couple of reports of an individual taking reality listings off the Internet and putting them on Craigslist. The homes were being advertised as renters when they were actually up for sale.

"Luckily, we don’t know of anybody that’s been naive enough yet to pay rent money without meeting the person, getting a contract, going and looking at the house and everything, " says Lutz.

Lutz also wants the public to be aware about some prank phone calls being made. The Zanesville Police Department and the Sheriff’s Office have received around 10 reports of females getting calls from a male.

"They start making threats over the phone. They start ordering them around to do things and threatening them if they don’t. The one caller even made mention that they wanted the female to meet them at a certain location and were supposed to call back with a date, time, and place-but they didn’t, " says Lutz.

The caller has been traced back to Mississippi. Lutz says there’s an investigator there who is also working on prank phone call cases too.

He says he has no idea why some of those cases have ended up in Muskingum County.

If you have received any of these threatening calls, you’re asked to call 740-452-3637.
