Local swimming pools will be open to families during the long holiday weekend, and the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department wants to make sure the water is ready for the summer crowds.

It held a safety seminar this morning for licensed operators to teach them about proper daily inspections.

"When we do our inspections, we’re looking at the water chemistry, acceptable water parameters, some safety equipment, and some required procedure that must be fill out daily with water chemistry, " says Public Health Sanitarian Jason Tilton.

The inspections are necessary to keep pools and spa’s sanitary so people don’t get sick.

"What causes a water-borne outbreak is pantheons in the water. People ingest it if there’s not enough disinfectant to destroy the pantheon, " says Tilton.

The health department says it also visits these facilities once a month for its own inspection.
