The Mystery of the Missing Time Capsule

Zanesville high school has the mystery of the missing time capsule sovled, but another one remains a secret–at least for now.

For more than fifty years the Zanesville High School time capsule has been buried near the school, but no one seemed to know where.

"There was a lot of talk about where it was," said ZHS Principal Mark Ulbrich. "There was a lot of talk that it was right here in front under the flag pole."

But that wasn’t quite the case.

"My wife and I were talking about it and I said it isn’t under the flag pole. It couldn’t be because the flagpole wasn’t there," said Stanley Vigus, a graduate of ZHS in 1955.

Vigus was a student at Zanesville High School in 1953, the year the time capsule was buried.

"They had the vault set up over there and you came in and signed a register and put whatever memorabilia you wanted into the vault," he said. "At the end of the day, they dropped it into the ground."

Vigus and his wife alerted the school where the capsule truly was. He says he can remember the day before they buried it.

"There was 800 people who signed the ledges," he said. "There were quite a few of those books. They said there is an audio tape in there."

Principal Ulbrich says discovering the capsule has inspired current students.

"More than anything, this really sparked the interest of our students to start thinking about what we’re going to be putting in the new time capsule," said Ulbrich.

But just what else is inside the capsule from 57 years ago? That will remain a mystery until the school opens it on May 22.

Zanesville will also bury a new time capsule in the fall, coinciding with the opening of the new school.
