Conditions this time of year are prime for severe weather, and some of those severe storms can be capable of producing tornados. Tornados can develop so quickly and are extremely powerful.
"Tornadoes not only will kill you but create enough utter devastation. Your stuff can be in the next county. Your house can be in your neighbor’s yard. It’s very traumatic seeing everything you own destroyed in a matter of 30 seconds, much different than a flood and much different than a fire that takes time, " says Dan Hartman of the Red Cross.
That’s why you should have a plan in place for your family, to protect them against this natural phenomenon.
"If your house has a basement, you’d better be downstairs, southwest corner, and under something-work bench, desk, whatever. If you don’t have a basement, you need to be in the middle of the building under the doorway, hallway, " says Hartman.
Make sure that you have supplies close by too, such as a flashlight, radio, first aide kit, some water, and a few snacks.
Hartman says once you find that protective spot, you’re not going to want to leave it until the storm has passed.
