It’s Anita Wright’s first time taking part in Relay for Life, and she was one of many who kicked off the event by walking the initial survivor lap at the Muskingum County Fairgrounds.

Wright is an 18 month survivor of breast cancer.

"After the initial diagnosis, which is totally devastating to you and your loved ones, it’s been a long journey, but it’s one that I’m proud to have taken. I am truly blessed. Along the way, I’ve met some truly amazing people, " says Wright.

People who she says have helped her move on with everyday life.

While she says her battle was difficult, she offers some words of encouragement to those who are continuing their battles with cancer now.

"Never lose hope. There are better days ahead. Even in the darkest hour, it does get better. "

About 30 teams are walking in the event this year, which will continue overnight and into tomorrow morning.

The goal is to raise $100,000 in Muskingum County, which will go directly to the American Cancer Society for cancer research and hopes of finding a cure.
