The weather didn’t stop people in Zanesville from attending the first Downtown Farmer’s Market of the year Wednesday.

In the rain vendors lined the parking lot of the Welcome Center with tables full of fresh vegetables, fruits and plants. Siegrist Orchard owner Mike Siegrist says farmer’s markets are vital for farmers.

"They’re very important. It gives us a connection with the consumer, to see what we have, because a lot of them don’t want to come out to the farm anymore and they come to a farmer’s market and everything’s centrally located and they have a variety to pick from," says Siegrist.

Each week Siegrist will be bringing items currently in season to the market. This week there was a variety.

"We have our own sour and sweet cherries. We have some strawberries, we have peaches, tomatoes, apples and some watermelons and our plants," he says.

The Downtown Farmer’s Market will continue on Wednesday’s from 4 to 6:30 p.m. until the middle of October.
