Five Dead In I-70 Accident /I-70 Now Open To Traffic

Authorities are on the scene of a fatal head-on collision on Interstate 70 East in Muskingum County. The Highway Patrol is now confirming that five people were killed in the accident.  There were 3 adults and 2 children killed in the crash.

It happened around 1:00 p.m near the Brownsville Exit,  West of Zanesville.  The Patrol says the initial investigation shows that a car traveling in the westbound lanes crossed the median and struck head-on a minivan traveling eastbound.  All five passengers in the car are confirmed dead.  The driver of the minivan is in serious condition and has been transported to the hospital.  A passenger in the minivan does not appear to be injured.  The crash remains under investigation.  The names of the victims will not be released until family is notified. Whiz News did find out the White Van involved in the accident is from Washington DC and the other vehicle in the crash, a Chevy, is from Ohio.

The Highway Patrol says both eastbound lanes are now open.

The Ohio Department of Transportation says the detour is State Route 13 to U-S 40 east.  Falls Township and National Trails Fire Departments are being called to the scene.  The Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office is also assisting at the scene.

Medflight has also been called to the scene, but will not be able to respond due to the rainy weather.
