Whether your’e swimming, working in the garden, or playing ball, it’s important to protect your skin.
Most people have had a sunburn, and the more often they do, the more crucial it is for them to lather up.
The Medical Director of the Health Department, Dr. Vicki Whitacre says, "The risks for not protecting your skin, well first sunburn which can make you very very uncomfortable, be painful. Three sunburns that peel double your risk for skin cancer, too much sun ages your skin and you can really get crinkly, wrinkly skin from severe tanning."
If you are in the water or sweating, you should reapply sunscreen fairly often. Otherwise, you should apply every two hours.
"Sunscreen is rated by its SPF, sun protective factor, you want a minimum of 15, and if it’s a baby, or a small child it probably ought to be 45 or 50," says Dr. Whitacre.
Doctor Whitacre also wants to remind people that clothing does not completely protect you from harmful rays, so it is always a good idea to pick up a bottle.
