13 people are dead from crashes across the state that occurred during the holiday weekend. That’s an increase of two from last year.

There were no fatalities here in Muskingum County but 2 serious crashes in Warsaw and along State Route 643 that hospitalized 2 individuals. The Zanesville Post of the State Highway Patrol says it made contact with 400 drivers and issued 231 citations.

"Two of the main things is speed and following too close, but the speed is still a number one contributor to all traffic crashes, " says Post Commander, Lt. Steven Rine.

Lt. Rine says it doesn’t surprise him that some people still refused to obey the traffic laws.

"People are creatures of habit, and we are the generation that people want to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible, " says Lt. Rine.

27% of those 231 citations that were issued dealt with seat belt violations, and troopers also issued 3 OVI citations.
