The new school year is weeks away but a local group wants all the kids to start off on the right foot.

The program "Lace Up for Kids" has been putting new shoes on children for 22 years. WHIZ, Eastside Community Ministry and Wendy’s Restaurants partnerto make this possible. Wendy’s owner Tim Thompson says it’s a great way to be able give to those who are in need.

"A lot of kids go back to school and they come with tattered shoes and it really helps build their confidence to be able to go back to school with new shoes," Thompson said.

Last year more than 1,200 kids started school off with new sneakers because of this program. Eastside Community Ministry Executive Director Bob Davidson said the program has done well over the years.

"I think it’s been successful because as a community Muskingum County is a very generous and  there also is a lot of need in our community." Davidson said.

Davidson hope for more donations this year. You can drop off a new pair of shoes and any Wendy’s location in Zanesville. All sizes are needed for boys and girls.

I(f you want a pair of shoes you can pick up an application from Eastside Community Ministry, WHIZ,  United Way, Community Action, Help Me Grow, Children’s Services, Salvation Army, and Muskingum County Welfare Office.
