A motorcyclist leads local law enforcement on a high speed chase, with speeds of more than 100 miles per hour, for a little more than 20 minutes in Muskingum County.

The Zanesville Post of the State Highway Patrol says it started in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70. Sergeant Jeremy Mendenhall says a Cambridge Post trooper noticed expired tags on the sports bike by two years. He says as the trooper attempted to pull over the driver, 24-year-old Herold Small Junior of Zanesville, Small led cruisers from the patrol, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Zanesville Police Department through the Y-City and surrounding areas.

Those involved kept in constant contact with dispatchers, giving vital information about road conditions, traffic, and weather.

"All these variables, we take into account….whether or not to continue the chase….whether or not the risk of the chase outweighs the apprehension risk, " says Mendenhall.

The motorcyclist was apprehended on the West Pike, in front of McDonalds after Mendenhall says the driver attempted to go into the opposing lanes of traffic, struck a median, and fell over. The suspect then attempted to flee on foot.

"I believe it was the Sheriff’s Office used the taser, which took him down. He kind of fought through the taser a little bit with all the clothes he had on and everything. He continued a little ways out here on (US) 40. Then he ran into the side of a patrol car and fell down, " says Mendenhall.

The Zanesville Post will be in contact with the Muskingum County Prosecutor’s Office to see what charges will be filed in this case.

"Obviously all the traffic citations and violations he did commit. We’re going to put that on him. I believe he’s under suspension also. So, those violations and anything that has to do with his wrecklessness and possibly causing serious physical harm to other people. I’m sure there’s going to be felonies that come out of this also, " says Mendenhall.

The suspect is being held in the Muskingum County Jail.
