Power Outage on Wheeler Road

Some east-end Zanesville residents spent part of Friday in the dark after a power outage. It happened on Wheeler Road off Sharon Avenue and also knocked out power to WHIZ Radio and TV.

"I heard a crack, and I was in the kitchen putting groceries away, the first thing I thought about was that it was one in the backyard off the hill, because I had one fall," said Loma Travis, Resident of Wheeler Road.

At around 9:30 a.m., the Zanesville Fire Department responded to a 911 call saying that a large tree crashed into power lines on Wheeler Road.

"We secured the scene until AEP got here, and we went up and talked to all the residents to make sure they didn’t get near the power lines til they were safe," said Bruce Burley, Assistant Fire Chief of the Zanesville Fire Department.

Burley says the American Electric Power Company will first have to turn off the power and then they will be able to remove the tree and begin working on the damaged power lines.

Residents say something like this was bound to happen.

"Well we have been expecting that one to fall for sometime, it was leaning out, it looked like it had a crack in it," said Travis.

"Oh for at least a good year, year and a half, it’s been leaning up there," said Terry DeeLancy, Resident of Wheeler Road.

According to AEP, it is expected to take nearly eight hours to take care of all the repairs and the removal of the tree. All power was restored at 3:00 Friday afternoon.  The power outage also caused problems for WHIZ TV with our digital signal, which remains off the air and our feed to Direct TV and Dish TV. Our engineers are working to make the repairs and service should be restored by Saturday.
