The medical community stresses the importance eye sight is to a child’s development, but Licking County Health Commissioner, Joe Ebel, says thousands of kids receive eye injuries every year that could damage their sight or potentially lead to blindness. It’s one of the reasons why August is deemed "National Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month."
Ebel says most of these eye injuries stem from sports accidents, misuse of toys, or handling harmful household objects. Direct exposure to sunlight is also a main contributor to eye injuries, but Ebel says it is preventable. Medical professionals recommend that kids should wear sunglasses that have 100% UV protection.
