5k Memorial Run For Area Marine

A local charity run this weekend is honoring a local soldier who died in battle.

An area marine’s memory lives on through the 6th Annual October Fest run. It was something he and a co-worker helped organize in the village of Dresden. After Brad Harper was killed in Iraq back in 2005 his co-worker decided to keep the 5k run going but rename it to Let Freedom Run.

"He’s my son and we don’t want his memory forgotten and like any other gold star family members, you want to make sure that your son or daughter, their memories are carried on and that it is also helping others. All proceeds will go to the Toys for Tots which is what the Marines sponsor and Brad was very active in that when he was involved in the Marines," Steve Harper Brad’s father said.

The memorial 5k run/walk is for anyone who wants to support those who serve our country.

"It’s for all gold star families who are out there and anyone who likes to support the soldiers and the Marines as they serve our country," Harper said.

He said you don’t have to run to come out and show your support. There are a lot of events for kids and families as well. Harper said some of Brad’s friends have been coming each year from all over the country.

"He must have been something special because they keep coming back and supporting him and his memory. In that way I know he’s not forgotten," Harper said.

Registration starts at 8a.m. Saturday Oct 30th at the American Legion in Dresden.
