A local woman, who lost her life to colon cancer, is still helping others with their battles.
The ninth annual Becky Ziegler Memorial Jam was held in Zanesville Saturday afternoon at The Barn. Tami Swope, a close friend of Ziegler’s and coordinator of the event, says Ziegler never looked at herself as a cancer patient.
"In between her treatments, she would still make it to band practice. It really picked her up and gave her new purpose in life," says Swope.
Swope says it’s amazing to see how many people rally around others in their fight against the disease.
"When people are first diagnosed with cancer, you go through so many stages. You need a wonderful support system. You can’t have too many friends, too many family members, and I think everybody realizes that there’s a chance they could have cancer themselves," says Swope.
Swope says recent statistics suggest one out of every seven people will be diagnosed with cancer. She hopes the event will raise around $30,000 by the end of the night. All of that money will stay local and help cancer patients here in Muskingum County.
