Tips for a Safe Halloween

With the fun of Halloween also comes things to look out for. We have tips on making this Halloween a spooky but safe one.

It’s always important for parents to check their kids’ candy, making sure it is sealed. Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz says it’s also vital for parents to know if their kids can handle trick or treating without them.

"If children do leave the home by themselves, it’s always good to be in numbers. So we suggest that kids, if they are old enough to go trick-or-treating by themselves, maybe take friends, stay in groups," says Sheriff Lutz.

Sheriff Lutz suggests that trick-or-treaters wear costumes so that they are visible. And as always, kids should remember ‘stranger danger.’

"Make sure your kids know never to enter someone’s home, unless the parents are with them. Because you never know what’s going to happen in those circumstances."

If you are concerned about who may be living within your trick-or treating area, you can visit the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office Website at for a list of registered sex offenders.
