The smell of turkey cooking in the oven on Thanksgiving is a comforting tradition for many of us, but it can also be a dangerous one if you aren’t careful.
The Muskingum Valley Red Cross says the number of house fires doubles on this day.
"There is nothing worse than a Red Cross volunteer or staff member showing up on your doorstep for a holiday, and we do. It’s so sad because it’s supposed to be a joyous day. It can be an emotional thing when your day is done. It affects your neighbors, and it affects your whole community because no one wants to see anybody have a bad holiday, " says Keely Warden of the Red Cross.
There are some steps you can take before the holiday to ensure your house doesn’t get as crisp as the skin on your turkey. Clean the grease out of the bottom of your oven.
"It’ll smoke. It’ll smolder, and then you will have flames. Before you know it, you may have a 20 pound turkey in the oven-you may have a fire out of control before you even realize," says Warden.
Leave pot holders away from the stove. If your refrigerator is next to the stove, make sure there aren’t any papers hanging on the side. Constantly have someone in the kitchen watching the meal progress, and have a kids free zone in the kitchen, keeping them three feet away from hot appliances.
