Halloween may be over, but there’s still a few fields of pumpkins left at McDonald’s Greenhouse.
The family grows between 8,000 and 10,000 pumpkins each year and has some leftovers after people scour for the perfect ones to carve or bake. So what does the family do with the thousand or so that are leftover?
"The cows enjoy them. When you dump them out there, they come a running, and it’s a good way of recycling your nutrients back into the ground, " says owner James McDonald.
The pumpkins are full of potassium and Vitamin A and help keep the cows hydrated because they contain a lot of water, but they need a little help before they dig in.
"You have to bust them. They can’t quite get a hold of a total round pumpkin. So, we normal drive over them or run our brush hog over them to bust them open. Then they’ll chew them on the inside and eat the rine and all," says McDonald.
The cold weather is helping preserve some of these leftovers so they don’t rot. McDonald says he treats his 35 cows to pumpkins once every two weeks.
