Some local residents are getting into the holiday spirit.

The public is invited to attend the 17th Annual Miracle On Main Street which marks the official lighting of the courthouse in downtown Zanesville. Not only is it a way to celebrate the start of the holiday season, but it’s also a way to attract business to the downtown area.

"It’s a great way for people to get out and walk around the downtown, a lot of people drive through our downtown, this is a chance to get out and stop in the businesses and see what’s going on in our historic buildings," said Manager Dana Matz of the Downtown Zanesville Association.

According to O.D.O.T, more than 130,000 people travel through downtown Zanesville every day. There are currently 186 businesses in the area with 50 of them participating in the festivities. Matz said they have several projects in the works despite the struggling economy.

"The Downtown Association, what we’re doing since things have slowed down, is figuring out what can we do best to prepared when the economy turns around."

The event will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday and continuing through Friday with WHIZ’s very own George Hiotis emceeing.
