Patrols out as Traffic Increases

Traffic clogs roadways as people begin their holiday travels.

Forty million Americans are expected to take to the roadways this holiday weekend. The State Highway Patrol’s Sgt. Chuck Merryman says they see more traffic this weekend than during other holidays.

"Thanksgiving it seems people are just trying to get together," said Sgt. Merryman. "They go the extra mile to spend the holidays together."

The patrol said they’ll concentrate on violations such as speeding, following too close and drinking and driving. They’ve also combined efforts with the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office to use the patrol’s aviation unit to track down violators.

"The air helps because they can check multiple vehicles," said Sgt. Merryman. "When you’re working the road you can only check a vehicle at a time."

The patrol will have increased surveillance from now through Sunday when the Thanksgiving travel season ends.
