Preparing for Deer Season

Hunters aren’t the only ones getting ready for this deer gun season, which begins Monday.

A support staff of taxidermists, mounters and processors also look forward to the week long season. For Phillips Meat Processing Preparation began months ago. Now, it’s down to last minute details like putting a trailer in for deer check-in. If you’re looking to process your deer, Phillips has a suggestion.

"Patience. When everyone comes in its between four and seven o’clock," said Dale Phillips owner of Phillips Meat Processing. "It’s just a flow that goes around the building. It actually moves pretty well but patience is a virtue I guess."

Phillps expects to see between 400-700 hunters this week, depending on the weather. It takes about two days to process the deer. Though it’s a busy week they’re really looking forward to seeing some familiar faces.

"Many many repeat customers," said Phillips. "It’s kind of fun actually. We look forward to it every year. It’s a lot of work but you see people once a year and I look forward to that."

And for those that like hunting but don’t need the meat, Phillips does process deer for Hunters and Farmer’s Feeding the Hungry.

Last year, Muskingum County led the state in deer donations with 10,000 pounds of deer sent to pantries. One deer can feed 200 people.

Phillips is also holding different contests everyday like the oldest hunter, youngest hunter and the smallest and largest deer.
