The wintry weather is here and so are the snow days. Several area school districts called off classes on Monday due to the weather.
Kevin Appleman Coordinator of Student Services for the City of Zanesville said that safety is of the utmost importance when determining whether or not schools will have a snow day. He said they try to notify students, faculty, and parents will in advance.
"Our Transportation Director Brian Carling and Matt Hiddle our Maintenance Director, they go out at about 4 o’clock and check the roads and then at that time what they do is they call Mr. Martin and tell him what the roads are if they’re slippery," said Appleman.
Ultimately the decision is left up to Superintendent Terry Martin on whether or not to have a two-hour delay or to call off school entirely. Appleman said that two-hour delays are used more often when only a few roads are affected by the weather.
"That gives us time then for the street department to clear them, and then we also have some in the county, there’s Washington Township and Falls Township, so they also have to clear the roads, plus is gives our guys our crew here at the schools to clear off our sidewalks, our parking lots and everything," he said.
He also noted that the state has cut calamity days from five to three, any extra days will be made up at the end of the school year.
