Learning About Breastfeeding

There are numerous benefits to breastfeeding.

"Of course mothers enjoy the fact that they lose a little weight quicker, which is wonderful. And the milk for the baby that the mother is providing is going to give the baby a lot of immunities which will protect them as they go on and meet and greet the world," says Ellen Morin, Certified Lactation Consultant.

If you choose to breastfeed, you can start taking classes before the childs even born.

"It’s always good to bring dads or the support person with them so that they have an idea of what to expect whenever they’re here at the hospital with breastfeeding," says Erin Burris, Childbirth Educator

The classes can help you get your breastfeeding schedule down pat.

"Basically what they’re going to do from the moment they get up in the morning, go to work, get to work, how are they going to pump, how often, how long, getting home, picking up the baby and what would they do at home," says Morin.

And help you to ensure the baby is getting enough nourishment.

"We give them a feeding log that they can keep track of and on that log it tells them what their goals for each day, from day one to day seven, and on out the first two weeks of what they should see with the baby eating, how many times a day, how often should the baby urinate and stool," she says.

If you do not take classes ahead of time there are certified lactation consultants to educate you while in the hospital. Genesis Bethesda has someone on staff seven days a week. And once you leave the hospital there’s classes weekly to answer questions and ease any fears.

"That class is important because a lot of times mom’s are at home and a lot of times they may not be seeing the pediatrician for a couple days and they’re wondering whenever they’re breastfeeding is my baby getting enough, am I feeding my baby, is my baby gaining weight," says Burris.

You can sign up for classes online or by calling the Genesis Nurse’s Line at (740) 455-4949.
