Some area children are receiving presents early this holiday season.

The Associates Lodge of Fraternal Order of Police hosted its annual "Shop with a Cop" event at Walmart North in Zanesville Monday night. 35 disadvantaged children selected through United Way were given the opportunity to spend $110 to buy anything of their choice.

"The idea is to put children, young children in with a positive atmosphere with law enforcement because so many times they see bad things happening, they get a good image, know that it’s safe to talk to an officer," said President Jim Hicks of the Associate Lodge FOP.

The program is funded through donations received by the FOP The organization hosts a variety of fundraisers throughout the year so they can sponsor events like this one.

"It’s one of the key reasons I got involved with the FOP because of the programs that they do with the children, we love helping children, we love seeing them, they’re happy, they’re joyful it makes it a lot more fun, especially during the holidays," said Hicks.

The FOP will also be hosting a senior citizens dinner serving more than 1,100 meals this Thursday at the Muskingum County Center for Seniors.
