12 Fires Reported in 4 Weeks Across SE Ohio

The month of January has been a rather difficult one for the Red Cross in Southeast Ohio.

Over the last four weeks, twelve fires have broken out across the area leaving many families homeless. And with such a high number, the Red Cross’s budget has been stretched very thin, but have been able to make ends meet.

"We are able to keep up and it’s because of fantastic volunteers and donors in our community and our united way that we’re able to be there to help the families when they need it most," says Red Cross Executive Director Marlene Henderson

Henderson also says the large amount of fires in winter typically happen in cycles because of often cold temperatures, but this winter has been no exception.

"We’re not too sure. Not all of them have been from alternative heating sources. There are some wiring fires that have happened."

Last year in January, there were only eight fires reported. If you would like to donate to the Muskingum Valley Red Cross, you can visit www.muskingumvalleyredcross.org
