Another Storm is on the Way

Another storm is on its way to our area, but this one is a little different, instead of snow, we may see freezing rain.

The Ohio Department of Transportation is pre-treating roadways to make sure that traveling conditions will be safer for motorists. While they can’t predict when the storm will actually hit, they can be prepared.

"To keep the ice from actually bonding down to the road, depending on how much salt residue is already on the roads, will determine whether we need to add more pretreatment," said Ray Dailey of ODOT District 5.

Dailey said by monitoring the weather, they can send crews out an hour early and once it begins precipitating, they can continue adding salt where it’s needed. Materials like limestone, cinders and even sand are spread along roadways to give vehicles better traction.

He said their budget has not been a factor in the department’s operations.

"Really we’re trying to maintain the safety of the public and the traveling, so right now we’re not so much concerned as the budget for how much money it’s costing for salt, as we are trying to keep the public safe," he said.

Dailey also wants to remind the public that just because you don’t see snowplows outside your home, doesn’t mean they’re not working. There are 18 plows designated for Muskingum county.
