An early morning fire forced two people from their home in Muskingum County.
Newton Township Fire Chief Allen Deaver says the fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at 3030 Thompson Run Road.
He says when firefighters from his department and South Zanesville arrived on the scene they found heavy fire in the living room.
Paul Greiner and Christina Havens were alerted to the fire by smoke detectors and got out of the home safely.
Chief Deaver says the fire was contained in about 30 minutes and the home suffered smoke and heat damage.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation but Chief Deaver says the fire is believed to have started near a furnace in the basement.
The Muskingum Valley Red Cross is assisting the couple with funding for clothing and food. The family is staying with family. This makes the 6th fire the Red Cross has assisted with in the past four days.
